Septic Services in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL

This is home. Our shop is here, which means Howey calls get answered faster than anywhere else we serve. The town was founded by citrus developer William John Howey, who began laying out his land near Lake Harris in 1921, and it is still small: 1,643 residents at the last census. Pumping $350, inspections $395, and if it is an emergency we are minutes away, not hours.

How a job goes in Howey-in-the-Hills

  1. Call (352) 298-9384. In Howey there is a fair chance we already know the property, the driveway and where the lid is buried.
  2. Response time here is a matter of minutes. We are based in town, so an emergency call does not wait behind a drive across the county.
  3. On site we locate and hand-dig to the lid, then read the tank before touching the pump. For repeat customers we compare it to what we saw last time, which tells us more than any single visit can.
  4. The tank comes out completely, solids included. If the field is showing its age, you get the honest timeline rather than a scare.
  5. Lid reset, sod back, and the price is the one we quoted. Permitting for repairs goes through the county health department and we handle all of it.

Called around 7pm for an emergency flush of the septic tank. They came next day, 8:30, on time! Very friendly and honest staff. Got the work done efficiently and quick, and also gave us good advice on how to prolong the health of our septic tank. Mr. Greg was very helpful!

Questions from Howey-in-the-Hills homeowners

Who permits septic work in Howey-in-the-Hills?

Lake County's health department. Small town, same county rules as everywhere else in Lake, and we file the paperwork ourselves.

How fast can you get here in an emergency?

Faster than anywhere else we serve, because our shop is in town. There is no drive time to quote you, which is exactly why our 24/7 line is worth having in this ZIP code.

I am on Little Lake Harris. Will a new drainfield even fit?

Usually, with the right design. Water covers half a square mile of the town's 3.67 square miles, so shoreline setbacks are real, but most lots have workable ground once we survey it properly.

My house dates to the Howey era. Is the original system still down there?

Almost certainly not, but pieces of it may be. The town was laid out starting in 1921, and systems here have been replaced in layers. We regularly find an abandoned tank sitting near the working one.

What we see in Howey-in-the-Hills

A town built on citrus

Incorporated May 8, 1925

Howey was incorporated as the Town of Howey on May 8, 1925, and renamed Howey-in-the-Hills in 1927. Its founder called the surrounding country the Florida Alps, and built a mansion, a hotel and a golf course to sell the idea.

The houses from that era, many in 1920s mission style, are still standing and still occupied. Their systems have been replaced over the decades, but the lots, the trees and the grade have not changed, and that is what dictates where a drainfield can go.

On Little Lake Harris

89 feet of elevation

The town sits at about 89 feet of elevation on 3.67 square miles, half a square mile of which is water. Howey housed his first prospective buyers in a tent city near the shore of Little Lake Harris, and the town has faced that water ever since.

Lakefront and near-lake lots here need their fields set with the wet season in mind. We live here, so we have watched the same yards through a decade of Augusts, which is a better data set than any soil map.

Away from the shoreline the sand is generous and the grade helps. Those are the easy installs, and we will tell you when you have one.

Small town, close watch

1,643 residents

The 2020 census counted 1,643 residents. At that size, we know most of the streets and a fair number of the tanks personally, which changes how we work.

We can keep a service history in mind rather than in a file, tell you when your last pump-out actually was, and catch a field going soft before it becomes a weekend emergency. That is the practical benefit of hiring the company that lives in town.
